Neutral paint colors are the most popular these days. And, when you're selling your house, a neutral paint palette can make you home look more appealing and inviting.
But, this doesn't mean that your house needs to or will look boring.
So, first, let me explain why neutrals are so popular. When it comes to decorating, it's all about balance. You can't go wild with all colors in all parts of the room. If you do, your eye just doesn't know where to focus. So, it can make the room look very chaotic and disjointed.
Pops of color are fine...in fact, they can be great when done right. These colors create focal points in the room.
Sometimes, people choose a focal point with a painting; other times it may be an area rug, or it could be accessories on the coffee table. Sometimes 1 accent wall painted on 1 wall works. There are many ways to do this pending on your taste and preference.
But, it really helps when you have your largest spaces in the room (i.e. the walls and floors) neutral...not so they are boring, but rather because they provide the foundation and canvas for the rest of the room. It actually gives you more flexibility to showcase your style.
And, importantly, using neutral paint colors gives you flexibility to change things later - things like your furniture, area rugs, pillows, window treatments, etc.
Now using neutral paint colors for the walls does not mean you need to go white. In fact, white can, at times, look a bit boring. Other times, white can really work.
Personally, l prefer adding a neutral shade that has some character rather than white. But, I like it to be a neutral tone that will allow you to add color in other ways. Personally, I love grays and greiges (that's a combo of gray and beige...so it's a warm gray.
